Schools
Asthma Free School Zone focuses on urban schools and their surrounding neighborhoods. In the 2007-08 academic year, the core program is being implemented in sixty NYC schools in three boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The program is currently cost-free for qualifying schools. Principals are expected to sign a Memorandum of Agreement. Criteria for selection include:
- school location in a DOHMH-designated high asthma prevalence area (zip code);
- recognizable air quality problemsparticularly traffic-related,
- geographic proximity to or a cooperative relationship with another school already in the AFSZ program, and
- a motivated school administration.
